Outsourcing software development to India can be safe for Saudi companies if you control the code, the hosting accounts and the payment schedule. India has large pools of skilled developers and working hours overlap the Saudi day well. The risks are unclear scope and poor communication, which a written scope, milestone payments and a staging site you can check daily largely remove.
Who is writing this
We are a software and web team in Kozhikode, India, and most of our clients are in Saudi Arabia and the Gulf. So we have an obvious interest. We will try to be useful anyway, including about when you should not hire someone like us.
Why Saudi companies outsource to India
- Cost: Indian teams usually quote well under Gulf agency rates for similar work.
- Time zones: India is two and a half hours ahead of Riyadh, so the full Saudi working day is covered.
- Talent: a large pool of developers in modern stacks such as React, Next.js, Node.js and Flutter.
- Familiarity: many Indian teams already know Gulf requirements such as Arabic RTL, mada and ZATCA.
The real risks
- Vague scope that leads to arguments about what was included.
- Code and servers held in the supplier's accounts, so you cannot leave.
- Large up-front payments with nothing visible for weeks.
- Arabic treated as a translation job rather than a design job.
- The person who sold you the project is not the person who builds it.
How to protect yourself
- Own the code repository, domain, hosting and app store accounts from day one.
- Pay against milestones you can see working, not against dates.
- Insist on a staging site or test build you can open at any time.
- Get a written scope listing screens, roles and integrations.
- Talk to the developers, not only the sales contact.
If a supplier will not put the code in your own GitHub or GitLab account, treat that as a warning sign.
When a local Saudi team is the better choice
If you need a supplier with a Saudi commercial registration for procurement, regular in-person workshops, or developers on site, a local company is the right fit. We say this to prospective clients early, because it saves everyone time.
