Shopify does not generate ZATCA-compliant e-invoices natively. A Saudi Shopify store has to connect to a ZATCA-integrated e-invoicing solution, through a Shopify app or an API integration with your accounting or ERP system, so every order produces a compliant invoice with the required QR code and, in Phase 2, is reported to ZATCA's Fatoora platform.
Does Shopify support ZATCA e-invoicing?
Not by itself. Shopify creates orders, not tax invoices that meet ZATCA's format. Phase 1 (generation) needs a compliant invoice with the seller's VAT number and a QR code. Phase 2 (integration) adds XML invoices in the UBL format, cryptographic stamps and reporting to ZATCA's Fatoora platform, which Shopify has no connection to.
So compliance comes from what Shopify is connected to, not from Shopify.
The three ways to integrate
- A ZATCA e-invoicing app from the Shopify App Store: fastest to set up, suited to stores whose accounting is simple.
- Sync orders to your accounting or ERP system (for example Zoho Books, Odoo, Qoyod or Microsoft Dynamics) and let that system issue and report the invoices.
- A custom integration between Shopify and a ZATCA-integrated invoicing provider's API, for stores with unusual flows such as B2B pricing, marketplaces or multiple legal entities.
Pick the route that matches where your books already live. Issuing invoices in one system and reconciling them in another is where most compliance problems start.
What to check before going live
- Simplified (B2C) and standard (B2B) invoices are both handled if you sell to both.
- Refunds and partial refunds generate credit notes, not edited invoices.
- Discounts, shipping and gift cards are taxed correctly at 15% VAT.
- The QR code on the invoice email and PDF scans correctly.
- Invoice numbering stays sequential across app reinstalls or migrations.
- Your wave date: ZATCA notifies businesses of their Phase 2 integration date by turnover band. Check yours in the Fatoora portal.
Common mistakes
Treating the Shopify order confirmation email as the invoice. Adding the app after launch and leaving months of orders without compliant invoices. Handling returns by cancelling orders instead of issuing credit notes. And assuming the payment gateway handles invoicing; it only moves the money.
